Kato, Happy New Year!! … Did you enjoy your X’mas?

(kato3.gif)

Yes, of course, I enjoyed it to the hilt.

(santa18.gif)

(xpasrt101.jpg)

(xmastree2.gif)

I don’t believe it… Kato, did you actually celebrate the Christian festival?

Well… Actually, I’m an atheist.

Are you really an atheist? I thought you were a Buddhist.

No, I’m NOT a Buddhist.

So, you don’t believe in the existence of deities nor gods, do you?

To be honest with you, Diane, I believe in my own god.

Your own god? … Who the heck is it?

I think I told you before… It is a traffic cop of this universe.

A traffic cop of this universe?… You gotta be kidding me… Are you really serious?

Yes, of course, I’m darn serious.

(collide01.jpg)

As you see, Diane, our Earth runs through this universe 1,000Km per second… And mind you, there have been no accidents since man appeared on the earth… So there must have been an extroadinary smart traffic cop in our universe.

I see… So, Kato, you consider this smart traffic cop to be your god, huh?

Yes, I do.

Well … then look at the following clip.

(jesus99.jpg)

Science Has Found Evidence Of God!?

Kato, you may just as well call your traffic cop “Jesus Christ.”

hmmmm… Diane, you’re smarter than I thought you were… By the way, how was your silent night?

Oh, it was marvellous and glorious.

(silent80.jpg)

I see… So, Diane, you enjoyed your silent night at your church, eh?

Yes, I did… So, Kato, how could you enjoy this New Year’s day with me?

I’ll dance with you like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

(astaire2.jpg)

I didn’t know that you can dance like Fred Astaire.

Oh, yes, I do dance like a magic dancer, and I’m crazy about salsa.

(salsa022b.jpg)

I can hardly believe it.

Believe it, Diane… They say, “One who believes will be saved.”

You’d better say, “One who believes in God will be saved.”

Anyway, I’m also crazy about mambo.

(mambo1.jpg)

Can you actually dance like that?

You don’t believe it, do you?

‘Cause I’m worried too much. If you dance like hell, you might go to heaven with stroke.

Hi, I’m June Adams.

Kato is a real movie lover, who tries to watch 1001 movies.

As a matter of fact, he has already accomplished his goal.

(lib50909a.png)

『Actual List』

(june001.gif)

Kato watched “The Arabian Nights” or “One Thousand and One Nights” as his 1001th movie.

You might just as well want to view it.

(1001nite.jpg)

(1001nite10.jpg)

The stories in “the Arabian Nights” were collected over many centuries by various authors, translators, and scholars across West, Central, and South Asia and North Africa.

The tales themselves trace their roots back to ancient and medieval Arabic, Persian, Indian, Egyptian and Mesopotamian folklore and literature.

In particular, many tales were originally folk stories from the Caliphate era, while others, especially the frame story, are most probably drawn from the Pahlavi Persian work Hazār Afsān which in turn relied partly on Indian elements.

What is common throughout all the editions of the Nights is the initial frame story of the ruler Shahryār and his wife Scheherazade and the framing device incorporated throughout the tales themselves.

The stories proceed from this original tale.

Some are framed within other tales, while others begin and end of their own accord.

Some editions contain only a few hundred nights, while others include 1,001 or more.

Trump Shock

(trumpshk.jpg)

(trump802.jpg)

(trump803.jpg)

(trump804.jpg)

So most people are worried

whether or not the following

incident will happen.

(trump007.jpg)

(diane02.gif)

Kato, it is amazing to know that Donald Trump has been elected as the next US President.

(kato3.gif)

Yes, you’re telling me… I’m pretty sure that nobody in the world—except the poor unsatisfied Americans—expected Trump to win the race.

But many Americans aren’t happy to have Trump as the next president.

How do you know, Diane?

Well…, if you see the following Youtube clip, it’s obvious.

(trumprat2.jpg)

Manhattan, New York

A great number of New Yorkers were protesting in Manhattan when they got to know that Trump had been elected as their next president.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such an angry protest in the previous US presidential elections.

As a matter of fact, there were some other protests:

(trumpla2.jpg)

Downtown, Los Angeles

(trumport.jpg)

In Portland, USA

(trumpen2.jpg)

In London, England

(trumpjpn.jpg)

Worldwide Reactions

So many people in the whole world aren’t happy to have Trump as the next US president, are they?

No, they are NOT…

But why not?

Well…, Donald Trump is telling the world in the following manner:

(trumplv2.jpg)

So many people in the world don’t like Trump’s ideas, do they?

No, they do NOT.

But how come so many people in the world don’t like Donald Trump?

…’Cause many people know about Trump’s shortcomings and dark secrets:

5 Darkest Donald Trump Secrets

(trumpsec2.jpg)

(trumpsex3.jpg)

10 Shocking Donald Trump Facts

(trumpfct2.jpg)

If so many Americans know about Trump’s shortcomings and dark secrets, why did they choose him as the next president?

They dislike Hillary Clinton much more than Donald Trump, I suppose.

Diane, are you saying that the Americans choose the less worse candidate of the two?

I guess so.

I’m a little bit worried about him.

What do you mean by that, Kato?

Well…, if so many people dislike Donald Trump, there might be an out-of-mind fanatic or two.

So what?

You see, Diane, if such a maniac has a gun, he or she will shoot the next president.

(trump007.jpg)

I hope, such a horrible incident will never happen.

I don’t think Donald Trump has a keen desire on gun control… That means, the probability for such an incident will increase.

Kato, don’t be so pessimistic… Look at the bright side of the next Trump administration.

Like what?

I don’t know… Look for it by yourself.

It’s so hard to look at the bright side.

(diane02.gif)

Kato, who is the above lady in East Indian costume?

(kato3.gif)

She is Madame Taliesin.

Is she your wife?

Oh, no… She is the queen of Halloween.

No kidding!

I’m dead serious! She is MY queen of Halloween.

Are you telling the world that she is a queen of Halloween ONLY for you?

Yes, that’s right. You’re telling the world, Diane.

But why is she wearing an East Indian costume instead of kimono?

Good question! … It is a long story.

Then make it short and tell me the story.

Well … When I arrived in my hometown, Gyoda, on Octover 19, it was so hot that Madame Taliesin welcomed me while bathing in bikini.

(sayuri82.jpg)

Kato, were you dreaming or what? It was terribly cold in Vancouver on October 19. No Vancouverites could take a dip in the water.

I know, I know, … I’m sure you were almost frozen to death, but I felt as if I were in Hawaii when I arrived in Japan on October 19. As a matter of fact, on October 20, it was 28 degree in Gyoda—my hometown.

How come it’s so hot in your homwtown at this time of year?

Good question, Diane! It is because Gyoda is famous for its fire festival.

(down11.gif)

(shibuya90.jpg)

(diane02.gif)

Kato, are you saying that the fire in the festival makes it hot in Gyoda at this time of year?

(kato3.gif)

Yes, you’re absolutely right.

I think you’re definitely kidding me. Who could believe you? By the way, who are the couple in the above video. They seem to wear old Japanese costumes.

Yes, they do… The festival is about Konohanasakuya-hime and her husband.

Who is Konohanasakuya-hime?

She is a famous character in Japanese mythology.

Konohanasakuya-hime

(firef02.jpg)

Konohanasakuya-hime (木花咲耶姫) is the blossom-princess and symbol of delicate earthly life.

She is the daughter of the mountain god Ohoyamatsumi.

She is often considered an avatar of Japanese life, especially since her symbol is the sakura (cherry blossom).

Kono-hana is also the goddess of Mount Fuji and all volcanoes.

Kono-hana-hime is the wife of the god Ninigi.

She met him on the seashore and they fell in love.

Ninigi asked Oho-Yama, the father of Kono-hana-hime for her hand in marriage.

Oho-Yama proposed his older daughter, Iwa-Naga-hime, instead, but Ninigi had his heart set on Kono-hana because Iwa-Naga-hime was ugly.

Oho-Yama reluctantly agreed and Ninigi and Ko-no-hana married.

Because Ninigi refused Iwa-Naga-hime, the rock-princess, human lives are said to be short and fleeting, like the sakura blossoms, instead of enduring and long lasting, like stones.

Kono-hana became pregnant in just one night, causing suspicion in Ninigi.

He wondered if this was the child of another kami.

Kono-hana was enraged at Ninigi’s accusation and entered a doorless hut, which she then set fire to, declaring that the child would not be hurt if it were truly the offspring of Ninigi.

Inside the hut, Ko-no-hana had three sons, Hoderi, Hosuseri and Hoori.

Shrines have been built on Mount Fuji for Konohanasakuya-hime.

(fuji199.jpg)

(fuji198.jpg)

It is believed that she will keep Mount Fuji from erupting, but shrines to her at Kirishima have been repeatedly destroyed by volcanic eruptions.

She is also known for having tore up the Yatsugatake Mountains, because it was higher than Mount Fuji.

SOURCE: “Konohanasakuya-hime” from Wikipedia

I see… Quite interesting… But, Kato, how come Madame Taliesin wore an East Indian costume, instead of the traditional Japanese costume?

Diane, have you ever heard of an old saying—“Fight fire with fire”?

Yes, I have. But I can hardly understand why the above saying has to do with Madame Taliesin’s East Indian costume.

Well…, Madame Taliesin is crazy about East Indian currey.

(sayuri201.jpg)

Kato, are you saying that I’m crazy about East Indian curry?

Yes, I am. The other day, You ate Indian curry at Kumagaya Station shopping mall!

(binjdi01.jpg)

(binjdi02.jpg)

『Indian Curry@Kumagaya』

Even if you’re not addicted to East Indian curry, you’re still crazy about curry in general.

Do you have any proof?

Yes, of course. You ate soup curry yesterday (November 4, 2015) at Neco Curry Shop.

(neco002.jpg)

(neco001.png)

『Actual Page』

Did you see me eat the soup curry?

Yes of course I did. You ate it in front of me. I couldn’t help but see you enjoying it to the hilt.

(neco003.jpg)

(neco006.png)

So, Kato, you enjoyed seeing my eating, huh?

Actually, I was a bit surprised.

Why is that?

…’Cause you told me that this place was a secret romantic spot.

Did I really say that?

Yes, you did. You even showed me the following page:

(neco001b.png)

『Actual Page』

Then you even asked the owner to play some romantic music.

Did I?

Yes, you did. You requested “Black Orfeus”—romantic Bossa Nova.

(orphe800.jpg)

(orphe801.jpg)

You told me, “I wish I could eat with you on the beach in Rio de Janeiro.

Did I really say that?

Yes, you did. I’m pretty sure that if you hear the following music, you’ll certainly recall it.

(orphe802.jpg)

Now, Madame Taliesin, did you remember what you said at the time?

I’m afraid not. There are no stages in that curry restaurant in the first place.

Is that right?

I’m quite positive, Kato, that you were probably daydreaming.

(November 5, 2015)

You see, Diane, Madame Taliesin is crazy about curry. That is, she fights hot weather with hot East Indian curry.

Are you saying, Kato, that’s the reason Madame Taliesen wore an East Indian costume in the Halloween party?

Yes, that’s right! You’re telling the world.

(laugh16.gif)

Me? Of course, I did enjoy my Halloween party.

Actually, I’m always enjoying my Halloween party bacause I wear this classical Japanese costume almost everyday.

(trump805.jpg)

(trump802.jpg)

(trump803.jpg)

(trump804.jpg)

(diane02.gif)

Kato, what do you mean by “Trump @ Joke”?

(kato3.gif)

Well, Diane, when I heard the news that Donald Trum would run for the president of the United States, I thought it was a big joke.

I think many people thought so.

How about you, Diane?

Well … I consider him as an entertainer rather than a businessman. So naturally he’s doing what he is supposed to do, I guess.

Trump is entertaining the people of this whole world, huh?

I’m just kidding.

By the way, Diane, what do you think about the following 2005 story, in which Trump boasted about kissing women and groping their genitals without consent.

(trump808.jpg)

Well… if what he said is all true, then he should go to jail, but I think he bragged about it to show off he is a macho man.

I think he was telling the truth.

But last Sunday, during the second presidential debate, moderator Anderson Cooper asked Trump, “You bragged that you have sexually assaulted women. Do you understandd that?” Then Trump replied that he had not actually done the things he had bragged about.

Trump lied.

How come you’re so sure, Kato?

…’Cause two women accuse Trump of groping them.

Holy cow! You must be kidding.

No kidding! I picked up the paper this morning.

Two women accuse Trump of groping them

(leeds01.jpg)

The New York Times broke news late Wednesday that two women (Jesica Leeds, 74; and Rachel Crooks, 22) have come forward with accusations that Donald Trump touched and kissed them without consent.

According to the newspaper, three decadees ago while flying in first class, Leeds accuses Trump of grabbing her breasts and putting his hand up her skirt.

Crooks, meanwhile, claims that in 2005 she ran into the GOP presidential nominee at a Manhattan real estate firm where he began kissing her without consent.

At press time, Trump’s camp has not responded.

SOURCE: Page 4 “24 HOURS Vancouver”
Thursday, October 13, 2016

If their accusations are true, the Americans should not vote Trump for their president.

Anyway, Trump apologizes for the controversial video remarks.

(trump802.jpg)

His apologies were made before the above women’s accusations, I assume.

That’s right. By the way, Hitler reacts to the news of the “Pussy” scandal.

You gotta be kidding, Kato. How could Hitler possibly react to Trump’s remarks.

Well… it is a parody. Just watch the following video clip:

(trump809.jpg)

It is really funny, but I think Donald Trum considers this as an insult. I’d rather see real people’s reactions.

If you say so, watch Robert De Niro rip into Donald Trump:

(trump810.jpg)

Naturally, Donald Trump reacts to the above comments:

(trump811.jpg)

In any case, there were Donald Trump’s most idiotic moments in the past:

(nuke002.jpg)

What about Trump’s offense against Hillary Clinton?

Watch the following video clip:

(trump812.jpg)

So, Kato, you seem to go against Donald Trump.

That’s right. Actually I like him, but I don’t want to see him become the president of the United States.

Why is that?

Please read the following article.

Former Trump Writer:

“I put lipstick on a pig”

(trump806.jpg)

Call it the Art of Regret: The ghostwriter who helped create the myth of Donald Trump as an omnipotent business titan admits now he was putting “lipstick on a pig.”

Tony Schwartz helped the GOP presidential candidate craft his 1987 bestseller, “The Art of the Deal,” and now says the title should have been “The Sociopath,” he told the “New Yorker.”

“I contributed to presenting Trump in a way that brought him wider attention and made him more appealing than he is,” Schwartz told the magazine.

Now, Schwartz is remorseful about his role in burnishing the Trump brand.

The writer now fears for the world if Trump is somehow elected in November.

“I genuinely believe that if Trump wins and gets the nuclear codes there is an excellent possibility it will lead to the end of the civilization,” he said.

(trump807.jpg)

(nuke001.jpg)

SOURCE: Page 8 “24 HOURS Vancouver”
Thursday, July 21, 2016

Like you said, Diane, Donald Trump is much of an entertainer—far from a politician. If Trump becomes the president of the United States, he might press the nuclear button more likely than anybody else.

I see your point.

(laugh16.gif)

【Himiko’s Monologue】

(himiko22.gif)

Well…, we’re living in the free world.

So, even Doland Trump could become the US president.

However, when America sneezes, the whole world catches a cold.

I wish Americans would choose a politically healthy person for the next president.

(trump64.jpg)

Best of Donald Trump (funny)

In any case, I hope Kato will write another interesting article soon.

Hello Diane,

We’ve got lots of sunshine these days.
Hallelujah!

I’ve still seen scaffolding around the cathedral.
Now what’s going on?
Are they making it twice as big as the current size?
Holy cow!

I suppose many people are wondering how soon the soup kitchen is available.

Well.. under this glorious weather, I’d rather hop and jump around with joy while strolling along the seawall, instead of eating soup indoors.

Maybe, I should take my own advice and step outside the library.
Don’t you think?

Well… On August 6, I watched a Spanish movie called “Abre los ojos (Open your eyes).”

(lib60913a.png)

(openeyes.jpg)

In this steamy, intriguingly complex, psychological thriller, the line between reality and fantasy is hopelessly blurred.
César tries to make sense of his life after a car crash leaves his once-handsome face grotesquely disfigured.
After he is placed into a psychiatric penitentiary for a murder he doesn’t remember committing, César’s only hope is to delve into the depths of his subconscious mind where the answer to ending his living nightmare lies in his dreams.”

After viewing the above film, I jotted down my comment as follows:

“The script is fantastically contrived for the sake of complexity,
but it is profoundly thought-provoking in the sense that life is what exists in your mind after all.”

So, I imagined that I’d been enjoying the sunshine in Stanley Park… He, he, he, he, he…

In any case, the above movie gave me an inspiration because I came to realize that “love is what exists in your mind after all.”

This realization let me write the following article—just for you.

I hope you’ll enjoy reading the above article.

In any case, sing while jogging around the seawall, Diane.
…see you soon.

Hello, my happy bohemian,

Oh, what a lovely story of unrequited love, Kato.
You really ARE a romantic.

You never know; they say the world is getting smaller all the time, so one day you may run into her sauntering into the library or skipping down your very street.
Now wouldn’t that be marvelous?

Very sweet story.
I’m impressed with you being into a special class as well;
in my school we had the classes for the “smart kids” (my older brother John was always in those classes),
but I seemed to always being in the middle so to speak; not with the handicapped kids,
but also not with the smart kids. Not that we cared much as kids, though; but good for you nevertheless.

I always knew you were brighter than the average cookie.
Thanks again for this story.

Life’s good; I’ve been having a great sense of well-being lately; hopefully the feeling will hold.
Maybe it’s this great weather.
Speaking of which, I’m going for a walk,

Tata for now,

P.S.:

Get to the beach when you can kiddo.
Summer’s short in Vancouver, you know.

If you like theater, Bard on the Beach is in full session now.

(bard01b.jpg)

Fred and I went to Romeo & Juliet on Saturday and it was awesome.

Highly recommended!

(bard03b.jpg)

See you soon, hopefully,

Love, Diane ~

(diane02.gif)

Kato, did you see “Romeo and Juliet” on the beach?

(kato3.gif)

You did see the play, didn’t you… Tell me about it.

Well… the synopsis goes as follows:

(bard05.jpg)

Two powerful families in Verona, the Capulets and the Montagues, have been feuding for generations.
When yet another street fight breaks out between the rival families, Prince Escalus threatens death to anyone who disrupts the peace again.

Meanwhile, Capulet, the family patriarch, learns that Count Paris is eager to wed his daughter Juliet.
He invites Paris to a masked ball that evening to begin the courtship.
Juliet’s nurse and her mother, Lady Capulet, worry that Juliet is too young for marriage but they still encourage her to consider Paris’ proposal.

Elsewhere in Verona, Romeo Montague pines for Rosaline, who disdains his affection.
His friends Benvolio and Mercutio urge him to forget her.
They decide to attend – uninvited – the Capulet’s party.

Juliet’s fiery cousin Tybalt is at the party and recognizes Romeo as a Montague.

(bard08.jpg)

Capulet forbids him to fight, so Tybalt vows to retaliate in some other way.
Romeo is oblivious: he and Juliet have discovered each other and are smitten.
They flirt and soon kiss.
Before the party ends, each learns the other’s identity and family affiliation.

Romeo hides in Capulet’s garden, where Juliet is on her balcony.

(bard06.jpg)

They profess their love and decide to wed secretly.
Romeo promises he will find someone to marry them.

The next morning, Romeo visits Friar Laurence, who agrees to marry the young lovers in the hope that the union will end their families’ feud.
Juliet’s nurse arrives to confirm the arrangements, and the secret ceremony takes place that afternoon.

Later, Tybalt encounters Romeo and challenges him to a duel.
Romeo refuses, knowing that Tybalt is now his kinsman through marriage.
Mercutio fights Tybalt instead and is fatally wounded.
Enraged at his friend’s death, Romeo attacks and slays Tybalt, then flees.
When Prince Escalus learns of this latest violence, he banishes Romeo from Verona.

Back at the Friar’s cell, Romeo plans his escape to Mantua.
But first, he spends his wedding night with Juliet.
As the sun rises, the newlyweds reluctantly part.

Juliet’s father informs her she must marry Paris in just a few days.
Her protests fail to change his mind. Desperate, Juliet seeks Friar Laurence’s help.
He offers her a potion that will make her appear dead for 42 hours and promises to send a message about the plan to Romeo, so he can rejoin Juliet when she awakens and then they can run away together.

Alone in her bedroom, Juliet drinks the potion and falls asleep.
The next morning, her nurse discovers her and believes she is dead.
Juliet is laid to rest in the family tomb.

Romeo, now in Mantua, never receives the Friar’s message.
When he hears news of Juliet’s death, he resolves to return to Verona to see her one last time, setting into motion the final fateful events for the young lovers.

I did see “Romeo and Juliet” NOT on the beach BUT in the library.

(romeo01.jpg)

How did you like it?

Terrible! … I didn’t like it at all… Please read my comment:

(romeo05.jpg)

This is a American adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet directed by Baz Luhrmann.

The film is an abridged modernization of Shakespeare’s play.

While it retains the original Shakespearean dialogue, the Montagues and the Capulets are represented as warring mafia empires with legitimate business fronts.

Swords are replaced with guns.

(romeo04.jpg)

As soon as I watch the first ten minutes, I realize that this film is a total garbage because Shakespeare would get mad with this comical rendition of the futuristic adaptation.

I dislike this kind of comical shit.

Tsk, tsk, tsk… Kato, your comment sounds awful! … Shakespeare would get disappointed if he read your comment.

Its adaptation is so bad that Shakespeare would get furious.

Is it reall that bad?

You surely bet on that… I was so disappointed that I turned to the famous “West Side STory.”

(lib60913c.png)

“Actual Catalogue Page”

(westsid09.jpg)

so, Kato, how did you like it?

It’s one of the best adaptations of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” Please read my comment:

(westsid10.jpg)

This is a 1961 American romantic musical directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, based on the 1957 Broadway musical of the same name.

Inspired by William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, the story focuses on the two gangs—the Jets led by Riff and the Sharks led by Bernardo.

Lieutenant Schrank and Officer Krupke break up a brawl, warning both gangs to stop fighting or they will be arrested.

Despite the warning, the Jets challenge the Sharks to a rumble for neighborhood control.

Bernardo’s younger sister, Maria, meets Tony (previous leader of the Jets) at the dance and both fall in love.

Bernardo tells Tony to stay away from Maria, and the tragedy starts.

I love mambo and music!

(westsid04.jpg)

I think this film remains the most memorable and iconic of all the Shakespeare adaptations for film.

so, Kato, you like mambo, don’t you?

Yes, I love it… I like salsa, too… As a matter of fact, salsa is a popular form of social dance these days, you know. It originated in New York City with strong influences from Latin America, particularly Puerto Rico, and Cuba. The movements of salsa have origins in Cuban Son, Cha-cha-cha, and Mambo. And the dance, along with the salsa music, originated in the mid-1970s in New York.

Is that right?

Do you know, Diane, from three to seven o’clock in the afternoon every Sunday, there goes salsa dancing party at Robson Square.

(salsa024b.jpg)

(salsa023b.jpg)

The other day, I enjoyed dancing with Mayumi.

(salsa022b.jpg)

(salsa005b.jpg)

Wow!… I didn’t know that you and Mayumi are such enthusiastic salsa dancers.

Well … there is a “West End Story.”

Oh…? Tell me about it… I’m all ears.

I’ve already told you about it.

(top01b.jpg)

Sex Appeal

(laugh16.gif)

【Himiko’s Monologue】

(himiko22.gif)

I love “West Side Story.”

Tony, the previous leader of the Jets, has fallen in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo—the leader of the Sharks.

Upon Maria’s request, Tony plans to go to the rumble and stop the fight.

Maria and Tony sing the following song:

(westsid05.jpg)

This song is about their eagerness to see each other after Tony returns.

They believe that after Tony stops the fight, the tension surrounding their forbidden love will finally vanish and the night will be “endless.”

They are frustrated by the seemingly slow place of the present day while they are anticipating the coming night.

Well … I hope Kato will write another interesting article soon.

So please come back to see me.

Have a nice day!

Bye bye …

So, Kato, you borrowed the above red-squared No.1337 DVD and watched “Flesh and Bone” at Vancouver Public Library, didn’t you?

(kato3.gif)

Yes, I did.

You’ve viewed 1337 movies so far free of charge, huh?

Yes, I have. Anything wrong with that?

Oh, no. I’m simply flabbergasted… There are still 28 patrons waiting for the DVD, aren’t there?

Yes, there are.

So this movie must be good, huh?

Well, not quite.

How do you mean by that?

After vieweing it, I commented as follows:

(lib60711a.png)

“Actual Page”

(flesh03.jpg)

This is a 2015 American television miniseries created by Moira Walley-Beckett.

It is a 482-minute-long 8-episode breathtaking, character-driven and stunningly captivating drama.

If you’re interested in the dark side of the entertaining business, and ballet in particular, you should view this mesmerizing drama.

The film focuses on Claire, who has a distinctly troubled, emotionally wounded and sexually damaged past.

The storyline is so disgusting that you might stop viewing halfway through as I almost did.

However, I simply care about Claire and want to know what will happen to her in the end.

Paul Grayson, an Artistic Director of the American Ballet Company, is such a bullshit guy that you would love to hate.

(flesh04.jpg)

Bryan Robbins, Claire’s brother and a former Marine, is a devil.

Romeo, a homeless man who lives under Claire’s building, is a mysterious and interesting guy with a peculiar sense of feeling the future and the mind.

Sergei, an owner of shadowy pole-dancing and lap-dancing club, is a ballet-enthusiast who understands Claire’s talent but who operates a sex-slave ring on the side.

In a nutshell, it is a disgustingly fascinating story.

At least you should be able to enjoy modern ballet and how it is created.

(flesh05.jpg)

482-minute-long, huh? Wow… eight hours! Did you see eight episodes at once.

Yes, I did. Anything wrong with that?

Oh, no. I’m just astonished. By the way, you said, the story is so disgusting that you almost quit viewing halfway through. Why is that?

Well… if you see it by yourself, you’ll know what I mean. Anyway, Diane, I just want you see the following trailer.

(flesh02.jpg)

It looks interesting. I’ll book the DVD to watch it by myself. But, Kato, how come you brought up this movie?

… ‘cause I read the following newspaper article on July 7.

Sex Harassment Claim

Against FOX’s Chairman

(carlson01.jpg)

Papers that rail against unfair working conditions deny their own employees overtime pay.

Outlets that decry white male workplaces are some of the white-est, male-est offices around.

This industry, which gets paid to call bullshit on everything and everyone it sees, is full of it.

And of course it is. No job exists outside our culture. And our culture is full of it, too.

So no woman in media (or elsewhere), was likely surprised when Gretchen Carlson, a former anchor for Fox News in the U.S., revealed she’s experienced sexual harassment.

What shocked the U.S. media world was how she did it, and who she named: Carlson filed a sexual harassment lawsuit filed against the media mogul and Fox chairman Roger Ailes.

(fox001.jpg)

Of course, that a wealthy, powerful media baron would sexually harass his employees is in no way surprising.

But it’s almost incredible that Carlson has outed him (allegedly) in such a public way.

So often sexual assault cases in workplaces are handled quietly, if at all, especially when the accused is in charge.

And Ailes’ power probably can’t be understated, though the New York Times described him this way: “a towering figure in television and Republican politics who has overseen virtually every aspect of Fox News Channel over the cable network’s hugely successful two-decade run.”

The quotes attributed to Ailes in the lawsuit are comically direct: “I think you and I should have had a sexual relationship a long time ago and then you’d be good and better and I’d be good and better,” Carlson alleges Ailes told her.

It’s a succinct and stunningly blatant summation of what’s long been a more insulated scenario for women in the media, or anywhere, really.

When Carlson didn’t engage in such a relationship, she alleges, she was downgraded, and then let go. Just like she’d been warned.

Sexual harassment, huh?

Yes, it is.

But has “Flesh and Bone” got anything to do with sexual harassment?

Oh yes… in the movie, you will hear something like: “I think you and I should have had a sexual relationship a long time ago and then you’d be good and better and I’d be good and better.”

Kato, you gotta be kidding.

No… I’m quite serious. If you’re in doubt, watch the movie. You’ll see what I mean.

But, Kato, why did you call me on this subject?

…’cause you might have more than likely gone through the same experience.

What makes you think so?

Well… Diane, five years ago, you wrote me the following mail:

(July 26, 2011)

I’ve read the above article.
Your article is excellent as usual.
I did remember that you lived in Yellowknife some years ago.

(canada2.gif)

(yellowk2.jpg)

Many years ago, I too lived for six months or so in the north, Whitehorse, Yukon Territory.

(faromap2.gif)

Actually, I worked for a mining company in a small town called Faro (Anvil Mines at the time) as secretary to the President.
I was given my own apartment (most of the staff had to live in bunk houses) and a huge salary compared with what I would receive in Vancouver.

So I was thrilled about that.
I didn’t want to feel totally isolated, though, so I asked whether I could eat with the others in the cookhouse and they obliged.

Thank God.
It was fun and much easier than doing my own cooking and making do with the limited selection in the local store.

The cook took a special liking to me and every day he would give me extra rations of cookies and cakes.

Pretty soon I realized that if I took advantage of these favours I would end up being a roly-poly.

(roly05.jpg)

so I would take them and then give them away.
Lotsa fun.

I do remember a really cute Japanese gal who worked up there telling me she had already gained 25 lbs in one year, and it showed.

(roly06.jpg)

It was all the lesson I needed, thankfully.

(creuset.jpg)

Le Crueset cookware is definitely famous.
A friend of mine in Kerrisdale has some and he said they’re very, very expensive but worth every penny.

(kerris2.jpg)

He has one pot that he uses almost daily and has for years and it has proved to be the best pot he’s every cooked with and worked with—sturdy, reliable, easy to work with.
So I guess it’s worth the big bucks, true?!

(creuset2.jpg)

Vancouver is pretty good, but not paradise I’d say.
The weather’s too crummy half the time, or more than half the time actually, Which is why my brother left Canada for France.
He could no longer stand the cold weather.
Certainly, I do miss him.

As a matter of fact, I’ve found an interesting joke:

(vanc102b.jpg)

You see, Kato, we don’t have many sunny days in Vancouver!
Anyway, I enjoyed reading your article.
Thanks again for all this.

Do you remember the above mail?

Yes, of course, I do.

You worked as secretary to the president of a big mining company. In other words, the president might have said, “I think you and I should have had a sexual relationship a long time ago and then you’d be good and better and I’d be good and better.”

Oh Kato, your imagination goes too wild! What makes you think so? Believe me, my boss was too decent to go that bold and shameless.

Well…, you see, Diane, you are somehow glowing out a halo around you—just like Saint Mary. That’s why the cook took a special liking to you and every day he would give you extra rations of cookies and cakes. Likewise, your boss felt the same halo around you and might have desired you in his case.

What an imagination, kato!

To tell you the truth, Diane, I sensed the same halo around you when I met you for the first time.

【Himiko’s Monologue】

(himiko22.gif)

Please take a look at the following list again.

(lib60524a.png)

“Actual List”

As Kato said, “Touching the Sound (1315)” and “Like father, like son (1307)” are two of the gripping and heart-felt movies.

I was really moved while watching the above.

As a Japanese woman, however, I was attracted to the following two movies:

(lib60524c.png)

“Actual List”

This is a 1965 Japanese period drama directed by Akira Kurosawa about the relationship between a town doctor and his new trainee, based on Shūgorō Yamamoto’s short story collection: “Akahige shinryōtan (赤ひげ診療譚).”

Trained in a Dutch medical school in Nagasaki during the 19th century, the arrogant Yasumoto aspires to the status of personal physician of the Shogunate, a position currently held by a close relative.

His father is already a well-established, highly competent physician.

Yasumoto believes that he should progress through the safe, and well-protected, army structure of medical education.

For Yasumoto’s post-graduate medical training, however, he has been assigned to a rural clinic under the guidance of Dr. Kyojō Niide (played by Toshiro Mifune).

Called Akahige (“Red Beard”) because of his reddish beard, Dr. Niide may seem like a tyrannical task master, but in reality he is a compassionate clinic director.

The film looks intot the problem of social injustice and explores two of Kurosawa’s favourite topics: humanism and existentialism.

(lib60524d.png)

“Actual List”

“Sansho the Bailiff” (Trailer)

(full movie, click “CC” for English subtitles)

This is a 1954 Japanese period drama directed by Kenji Mizoguchi (溝口健二), based on a short story of the same name (山椒大夫) by Mori Ōgai (森鴎外).

The film follows two aristocratic children who are sold into slavery.

The children grow to young adulthood at the slave camp.

Older sister Anju (安寿) still believes in the teachings of her father, which advocate treating others with humanity, but her brother Zushiō (厨子王) has repressed his humanity, becoming one of the overseers who punishes other slaves, in the belief that this is the only way to survive.

Anju hears a song from a new slave girl from Sado which mentions her and her brother in the lyrics.

This leads her to believe their mother is still alive.

Zushiō is ordered to take Namiji (波路), an older woman, out of the slave camp to be left to die in the wilderness due to her sickness.

Anju accompanies them, and while they break branches to provide covering for the dying woman they recall their earlier childhood memories.

At this point Zushiō changes his mind and asks Anju to escape with him to find their mother.

Anju asks him to take Namiji with him, convincing her brother she will stay behind to distract the guards.

Zushiō promises to return for Anju. However, after Zushiō’s escape, Anju commits suicide by walking into a lake, drowning herself so that she will not be tortured and forced to reveal her brother’s whereabouts.

It is a gripping and heartbreaking story.

“Sansho the Bailiff” bears many of Mizoguchi’s hallmarks such as portrayals of poverty, a critical view of the place of women and elaborately choreographed long shots.

In any case, it is one of the Mizoguchi’s finest works with Ugetsu (雨月) made in 1953.

I hope Kato will write another interesting article soon.

So please come back to see me.

Have a nice day!

Bye bye …

Hi, I’m June Adams.

Kato is a real movie lover, who tries to watch 1001 movies.

As a matter of fact, he has already accomplished his goal.

Kato watched “The Arabian Nights” or “One Thousand and One Nights” as his 1001th movie.

You might just as well want to view it.
